Five Canadian Hospitals Hit by Ransomware Attack
The Breach
The affected hospitals include Bluewater Health, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Erie Shores HealthCare, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, and Windsor Regional Hospital, along with their service provider TransForm Shared Service Organization. A shared drive containing sensitive information was compromised in this alarming incident.
Patient and Employee Data at Risk
Bluewater Health reported that a patient database report, encompassing around 5.6 million patient visits by approximately 267,000 unique patients, was stolen. The breach also included some employee data. The compromised shared drive contained essential information about individuals employed by Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, including names, addresses, social insurance numbers, and more.
No Need to Worry
While these attacks are concerning, the hospitals have clarified that no banking information was stolen during the breach. They are actively working to identify the impacted individuals and restore their systems.
The Threat Actor
Though the threat actor behind the attack remains unnamed, the Daixin ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the incident. They have posted online data allegedly stolen from these hospitals, including personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) records.
